The latest BMBI report shows that in January 2026 like-for-like value sales fell 2.6% year-on-year, with volumes down 7.2% while prices rose 5.0%, indicating continued pressure on trade activity despite inflation-driven price growth. In contrast, the PHMI recorded a 3.0% rise in like-for-like value sales, although volumes declined 2.8% as prices increased 6.0%, suggesting resilience in parts of the specialist merchant sector despite broader cost pressures. A government-approved scheme for 1,700 homes has been cleared following a public inquiry despite environmental objections.
