Social housing sees major investments! From £11m decarbonisation project to vital repairs & fire safety upgrades, explore the latest contract awards shaping the sector.

Aiming to advance sustainability in social housing, Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) has called off a £11.1m contract to Sustainable Building Services (UK) for a 43-month decarbonisation program. The project will unfold in two stages: first, PAS2035 Consultancy Services will be provided to assess, design, and coordinate energy-efficient improvements for up to 100 properties. In the second phase, approved energy efficiency measures will be implemented to enable funding release from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), ensuring compliance with national retrofit initiatives. Focusing on responsive maintenance and tenant well-being, Tollcross Housing Association Ltd. has commissioned a 36-month, £272k contract for day-to-day reactive repairs and void property maintenance across its housing stock in Glasgow. Multiple suppliers, including PMFM, NR Joinery, Briden Construction Group, MCS, and Bell & Higgins Construction, have been appointed to deliver a multi-trade service. The contract spans fourteen trade lots, covering crucial works such as electrical repairs, plumbing, joinery, roofing, glazing, underground drainage, and medical adaptations to support accessibility improvements.

Demonstrating a commitment to increasing social housing availability, Fife Council has announced a £5.42m investment in an affordable housing development in Kinghorn. The contract has been awarded to Glenesk Homes, which, as the site’s exclusive land developer, will design and build 25 new homes for social rent. This project forms part of Fife’s broader housing strategy, aimed at reducing housing shortages and providing modern, energy-efficient homes for residents. Prioritizing urban redevelopment and safety, City of Doncaster Council has signed a £145k, four-month contract with Tidysite Skips to execute garage demolitions under the St. Leger Homes programme. The project will address aging and unsafe structures, incorporating asbestos removal, building demolitions, retaining wall construction, and fencing installation to repurpose land for community benefit.

Highlighting the importance of environmental management, Mid Devon District Council has engaged RSK Hi-Line for a 48-month, £100k contract to deliver arboriculture services across its housing stock and public properties. The contractor will provide tree removal, pruning, and associated works to maintain safety and improve the visual appeal of communal spaces. Given the urgency of void property turnover, the contract mandates a five-working-day response and completion timeframe, ensuring swift execution of necessary works. Reinforcing fire safety standards in social housing, Cambridgeshire County Council has entrusted Walker Fire UK with a 48-month, £300k framework contract for fire risk assessments across council-owned properties. This initiative supports a rolling schedule of fire safety inspections, risk evaluations, and compliance measures. Additionally, the framework is open to neighboring city, district, and borough councils within Cambridgeshire, enhancing regional fire safety preparedness.
