The latest UK housing and construction data shows continued market softness. The Scottish Government reported 17,268 home completions and 14,955 starts in 2025–26, both down year-on-year. Meanwhile, the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) and Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) recorded weaker sales volumes in April despite higher prices. A new report by Onward warns that London is facing its biggest housebuilding challenge since the Second World War, with just 4,170 housing starts in 2024/25 despite population growth of almost 100,000, and calls for planning and policy reforms to boost housing delivery. Onward
